THORP , WA — Robins Grocery located on Thorp Hwy caught on fire early in the morning on Feb. 28, 2007 . The fire has been contained and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Kittitas County Fire District #1 (KCFD #1) was called out at 12:17 a.m. and responded to the fire with three structure engines, two tenders and the command truck. Chief Evans immediately asked for mutual aid from Kittitas County Fire District #7 (KCFD #7) and Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue (KVFR). District #7 responded with a Chief Officer and an engine company and KVFR was able to supply one structure engine and a medic unit to help put out the fire. The building was not occupied at the time which gave KCFD #1 the opportunity to use an outside approach to contain the fire. The road was blocked off between the post office and at the end of the “S” curve by the fire station along Thorp Hwy. There were 23 volunteers from KCFD #1, 5 from District #7 and 5 from KVFR. All surrounding structures are still in good condition and were not damaged by the fire at Robins Grocery. The building is a historical land marker for down town Thorp. Many community members gather together for coffee, lunch, Friday nigh dinners, etc. “Robins Grocery is like a hub for the community,” said Chief Evans. A majority of the community pass through the store on a daily basis. Everybody is in utter disbelief that they have lost such an important entity. |
